What are digital skills?

Mashable has put together a short list of fundamental skills that every college graduate should possess, from simply branding himself online to learning basic coding. They're guaranteed to increase the overall digital know-how.

While many think of digital skills purely with regard to coding and software skills, at Fronesys they view digital skills down three different dimensions:

• network collaboration skills: using digital technologies to connect, join, fuse, and bring together people, ideas, opportunities, means and resources across boundaries of time and space
• value creation skills: using lean start-up principles to understand and drive the processes of idea development, hypothesis testing, customer interaction and value creation
• functional skills: the digital economy needs more than just people with software skill; in fact, it is grounded on a confluence of three types of skills - technological, management and business, and design skill

Educational Technology and Mobile Learning published the 20 digital skills every 21st century teacher should possess. Because how would it be possible to enliterate the students, when the educator isn't himself equipped with digital skills. The original list that was created in 2011 comprised 33 skills, after reviewing they decided to do some merging and finally ended up with the 20 skills you can read here and below. 
1- Create and edit digital audio
2- Use Social bookmarking to share resources with and between learners
3- Use blogs and wikis to create online platforms for students
4- Exploit digital images for classroom use
5- Use video content to engage students
6- Use infographics to visually stimulate students

7- Use Social networking sites to connect with colleagues and grow professionally

8- Create and deliver asynchronous presentations and training sessions

9- Compile a digital e-portfolio for their own development
10- be able to detect plagiarized works in students assignments

11- Create screen capture videos and tutorials

12- Curate web content for classroom learning
13- Use and provide students with task management tools to organize their work and plan their learning
14- Use polling software to create a real-time survey in class
15- Understand issues related to copyright and fair use of online materials
16- Use digital assessment tools to create quizzes
17- Find and evaluate authentic web based content
18- Use digital tools for time management purposes
19- Use note taking tools to share interesting content with your students
20- Use of online sticky notes to capture interesting ideas

Ollie outlined the importance of five digital skills: a) find, manage, store information, b) communicate, c) transact, d) solve problems, e) create content.

The digital skills outlined in the animation were: a) to retrieve and access information, b) to store information, c) to produce information, d) to present information, e) to exchange information.

Finally the digital skills outlined by meshable were:

a)    setting up a WiFi Network

b)    backing up the cloud

c)    basic photo editing

d)    basic video editing

e)    Google Docs and Microsoft Office

f)     HTML and basic coding

g)    setting up a website and domain

h)   converting file formats

i)     online banking

j)      branding yourself in a digital community

I believe all digital skills are very important for the future since the digitalization has conquered as well the business market as our personal lifes. I think the Meshable List is more specialized for professionals. Personally I agree with Ollie’s and the animation’s suggestions. it is important nowadays to know how to manage information (search, find, retrieve, store, produce, present). Also it is very important to communicate with friends and colleagues and exchange with them. Transacting and communicating with the authorities is another important digital skill of 2015 and I believe that everyone should have the abilities to manage that.
